Soccer Jargon for Beginners: 50+ Terms Explained Simply

  • Offside – Don’t hang near the opponent’s goal before the ball is played.

  • Corner Kick – Kick from the corner after the ball goes out off a defender.

  • Free Kick – A do-over kick because someone broke a rule.

  • Penalty Kick – A free shot from close to goal for a big foul.

  • Goal Kick – Goalie restarts play after the ball goes out off the attacking team.

  • Throw-In – Throw the ball back into play when it goes off the side line.

  • Dribbling – Moving with the ball at your feet.

  • Header – Hitting the ball with your head.

  • Hat-Trick – Scoring three goals in a single game.

  • Assist – Passing to help someone else score.

  • Red Card – Serious foul: player is sent off.

  • Yellow Card – Warning for breaking a rule.

  • Nutmeg – Passing the ball through someone’s legs.

  • Clean Sheet – Goalkeeper or team doesn’t let in any goals.

  • Pitch – The soccer field.

  • Striker – Player whose main job is scoring goals.

  • Midfielder – Player who helps both attack and defend.

  • Defender – Player whose main job is stopping the other team from scoring.

  • Goalkeeper / Keeper /Goalie – The player who protects the goal.

  • Volley – Kicking the ball before it hits the ground.

  • Chip – Kicking the ball over someone lightly, often the goalie.

  • Tackle – Taking the ball away from an opponent.

  • Marking – Staying close to a player to stop them from getting the ball.

  • Man-to-Man – Each player is responsible for guarding a specific opponent.

  • Zonal Marking – Players guard areas, not specific players.

  • Counterattack – Quick attack after stopping the opponent.

  • Through Ball – A pass that splits defenders and goes to a teammate.

  • Set Piece – Free kick, corner, or throw-in setup.

  • Header Goal – Scoring a goal with your head.

  • Own Goal – Accidentally scoring for the other team.

  • Backheel – Passing or shooting the ball with your heel.

  • Dummy / Feint – Pretending to touch or kick to trick someone.

  • Overlap – A teammate runs past you on the wing to create space.

  • Wall – Players stand together to block a free kick.

  • Sweeper – Defender behind everyone to clean up loose balls.

  • Off the Post – Ball hits the goalpost instead of going in.

  • Cross – A pass from the side toward the goal.

  • Long Ball – Kicking the ball far down the field.

  • Through the Middle – Passing the ball down the center of the pitch.

  • Volley Goal – Scoring with a ball before it hits the ground.

  • Corner Flag – The small flag marking the field corners.

  • Extra Time – Additional time added after a draw.

  • Penalty Shootout – Kicking penalties to decide a winner after a draw.

  • Golden Goal – First goal in extra time wins (rare now).

  • Off the Bar – Ball hits the crossbar instead of going in.

  • Header Clearance – Defender hits the ball away with their head.

  • Half-Time – Break between first and second half.

  • Full-Time – End of the game.

  • Kick-Off – Start or restart of the game.

  • Substitute / Sub – Player who comes on to replace another.
